This information applies to Lineage Manager for Dogs v2.00 and newer only.

This page describes the process for importing an old v1.33 database into a new v2 database. Note: Importing is not the same as 'opening' a database from LMD v2.

About the LMD v1.33 User Database Files

LMD version 1.33 stores your dog information data in three (3) database files, 'labs' is our example database name for the examples on this page, your database will have a different name:
  • labs.dta
  • labs.dtv
  • labs.dtm
These three files must be made accessible to LMD v2 so the data can be imported.

Step 1: Finding your LMD v1.33 database and placing it on a USB flash drive

Exit LMD 1.33 on the 'source' computer before starting this procedure. We assume that you already have installed LMD version 2 on the 'destination' (new) computer.

How to find your LMD v1.33 database files:

  1. Using Start/All Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer, locate the three LMD database files on the source computer (on Windows 7 there is a folder icon on the taskbar you can use to start Windows Explorer). Windows XP or earlier: The default LMD 1.33 installation location is C:\Program Files\nwps\lmd16\program - the files will most likely be in there - but only if you are using Windows XP or earlier. Windows Vista 32 or Windows 7 32 bit: you will find the files in a very strange place: C:\users\YourLoginName\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\nwps\lmd16\program -- See this page for more details about that strange place.
  2. Select all three files (labs.dta, labs.dtv, labs.dtm using our example database name) and right click and select 'Copy'. If you cannot figure out which file is which, copy all files starting with your database name, up to 7 files - in our example it is labs.
  3. Place a USB flash drive into the source computer.
  4. Now right click on the USB flash drive in Windows Explorer and 'Paste' them to the USB flash drive.
  5. Move the storage media (USB Flash Drive or CDR) to the destination computer.

OPTIONAL Step 1a: Optional Networked Computer Expert Method

If both computers are networked, simply copy the files from one computer to the other through shared directories using Windows Explorer. Use the same procedure as above except you use the network shared directories instead of a USB Flash Drive.

OPTIONAL Step 1b: LMD 1 and LMD 2 are on the same computer

Having both programs on the same computer makes things a bit simpler. You will not need a USB flash drive. All you will need to know is where the LMD 1.x database files are located on your computer. Then you can skip step 2 below.

Step 2: Importing your LMD v1.33 database into LMD v2.x

LMD version 2 is assumed to be installed on the 'destination' (new) computer. We are assuming your 'new' computer is Windows 10, 8.1/8, 7 or Vista (either 32 or 64 bit operating system). Remember, from within LMD you can always press the F1 key to see the help file - it has this process detailed.

How to import your v1.33 data:

  1. Start LMD v2 and create a new database. (If you were using a database already, the opening window has ' Database Question' Yes/No - press No and create a new database.)
  2. Make sure the USB flash drive is plugged into the destination computer.
  3. Click on the left control panel bar 'Lineage Database', then click on the Database Maintenance button (icon).
  4. In the right side panel, locate and press the 'Import from v1.x Database' button. Use the file open window to navigate to the labs.dta file on your USB flash drive and then open it.
  5. The import process will now proceed. When it is done you may see a list of dogs not imported. We strongly recommend saving or printing that list because you may need to work on the dogs that they were linked to in v1.33.

That list you may see in step 5 is a list of dogs that appeared to be duplicated. In order to prevent duplicated dogs in the database, we 'normalize' the dog's registered name meaning we remove spacing and punctuation to find just the basic name. If two dogs end up with the same basic name, we only import the first dog and the second dog appears in that list. You will have to check the dogs in the list against dogs already in the database and fix the problems.
